چکیده

A neural network model of visual motion perception and speed discrimination is presented. The model shows how a distributed population code of speed tuning, that realizes a size–speed correlation, can be derived from the simplest mechanisms whereby activations of multiple spatially short-range filters of different size are transformed into speed-tuned cell responses. These mechanisms use transient cell responses to moving stimuli, output thresholds that covary with filter size, and competition. These mechanisms are proposed to occur in the V1“MT cortical processing stream. The model reproduces empirically derived speed discrimination curves and simulates data showing how visual speed perception and discrimination can be affected by stimulus contrast, duration, dot density and spatial frequency. Model motion mechanisms are analogous to mechanisms that have been used to model 3-D form and figure-ground perception. The model forms the front end of a larger motion processing system that has been used to simulate how global motion capture occurs, and how spatial attention is drawn to moving forms. It provides a computational foundation for an emerging neural theory of 3-D form and motion perception. © 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Neural dynamics of motion processing and speed discrimination

A neural network model of visual motion perception and speed discrimination is presented. These mechanisms use trans...

Impaired Retinal Function in Young Labrador Retriever Dogs Heterozygous for Late Onset Rod-Cone Degeneration

Xenon-flash d.c.-electroretinograms were recorded from dark adapted, rod-cone degenerate homozygote affected (n = 6), heterozygote carrier (n = 3) and control retinas (n = 4) at 3 and 4 months of age, starting at 0.6 log units below control PII threshold. One log unit higher stimuli were necessary to evoke PII in heterozygote and affected retinas compared to controls. Unique to the heterozygote...

Inversion superiority in visual agnosia may be common to a variety of orientation polarised objects besides faces

Selective impairment in recognition of faces (prosopagnosia) resulting from certain localized cortical lesions has been advanced as an argument for a face specific brain module. The argument is claimed to be strengthened by the discovery of an inversion superiority effect in the recognition of faces by a prosopagnosic patient (Farah et al., Vis Res 1995b;35:2089-2093). The present paper reports...

Definition and detection of binocular disparity

Stereoacuity experiments tested definitions of binocularly disparate spatial positions by perturbing the binocular correspondence of the two half-images. Dichoptic translations perturbed zero-order retinal positions; expansions perturbed first-order horizontal separations; rotations perturbed first-order orientations; and anisotropic expansions deformed first-order two-dimensional (2D) structur...

Functional recovery of retina after sodium iodate injection in mice

ERGs and the azide responses were recorded from mice before and periodically up to 6 weeks after retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) damage by iodate injection to follow the recovery of retinal pigment epithelium and retinal function. At 14 days postinjection, there was a partial recovery of the maximal b-wave amplitude and the azide response but no further recovery was found after 14 days. The re...
